After receiving a $9,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society In Partnership with Petsmart Charities, we implemented the
FIX FOR FIFTEEN
spay/neuter program for area residents who needed financial assistance with providing the surgery for their household pets.

The phone calls poured in and our allotted funds were quickly exhausted. Although we're no longer accepting
applicants for the program, our partners in the program,
Angels of Assisi in Roanoke and
Planned Pethood of Franklin
County, are still making surgery appointments for those residents who have been approved.
We have sterilized
approximately 250 cats so far, and we expect the program to eventually take care of 500 to 600 cats.
Thanks
to everyone involved in this extraordinary effort.

We have expanded our online presence via several other social media outlets. You can see us on Facebook by clicking on the "Facebook Badge" on the top right of the page. We are also listing our available cats on
Petfinder. Volunteer info may be found at our
BCB Volunteers Facebook page.

Have you ever wondered how we identify the ferals and community cats that
have been "fixed"? The answer is shown in the image to the left.
This is known as "ear tipping" and there are no adverse effects to the animal.
A small piece of the ear is removed (usually during the spay/neuter
procedure) while the animal is under anesthesia.
This is a universal
sign to both animal welfare advocates and to animal control officers that
this feline has already been sterilized.

For Feral Cat Caretakers: Thank you for logging on to our
Barn Cat Buddies site. Currently we have no barns or other facilities in
reserve and we constantly run ads and post flyers up. If you have kitties
to re-home first please
click here to read the protocol . Familiarize yourself
with it so you can speak to farms in your area about how to safely re-home a
kitty. Then feel free to
download,
print and post barn cat flyers in as many places as you can. Some areas
could be vet's offices/laundromats/tack shops, etc. You can get to places we
cannot. Calls that come in from the areas where you post a flyer will be
referred back to you.
CLICK HERE to email us and
let us know where you are posting and how many cats need to be placed.
One small effort such as talking up the program and posting flyers can pay
off in a big way!

The Starfish Story
Original Story by: Loren Eisley
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"
The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die."
"Son", the man said, "don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can’t make a difference!"
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, "I made a difference for that one!"

I am the voice of the voiceless:
Through me, the dumb shall speak;
Till the deaf world's ear be made to hear
The cry of the wordless weak.
From street, from cage and from kennel,
From jungle, and stall, the wail
Of my tortured kin proclaims the sin
Of the mighty against the frail
You can make a difference in an animal's life.
